Shoulder Apprehension Test

Overview

The apprehension test of the shoulder is used to assess for instability of the glenohumeral joint, by applying pressure as if to anteriorly dislocate the glenohumeral joint.
  • Position

  • Supine or upright.
  • How to Perform

  • Abduct patient's arm to 90°, externally rotate the shoulder and apply an anteriorly-directed pressure to the posterior humerus.
  • Abnormal If

  • Pain, or it the patient becomes apprehensive about impending dislocation of their shoulder.
