Shoulder Apprehension Test
Overview
- The apprehension test of the shoulder is used to assess for instability of the glenohumeral joint, by applying pressure as if to anteriorly dislocate the glenohumeral joint.
Position
- Supine or upright.
How to Perform
- Abduct patient's arm to 90°, externally rotate the shoulder and apply an anteriorly-directed pressure to the posterior humerus.
Abnormal If
- Pain, or it the patient becomes apprehensive about impending dislocation of their shoulder.
