McMurray's Test (Lateral)

Overview

  • Test For

  • Tear of the lateral meniscus.
  • How to Perform

  • With the knee in full flexion, apply a varus (laterally directed) force to the medial knee. Holding the sole of the foot, internally rotate the leg and extend the knee.
  • Abnormal If

  • A click is felt or heard. This may be associated with pain.
The McMurray test is approximately 20% sensitive and 90% specific for menisceal tears.
