Pleural Fluid Analysis
Analysis of a pleural fluid sample is performed to assist in diagnosing the cause of a pleural effusion. Tests performed may include biochemistry, cell counts, cytology and culture.

Elevation weakly suggestive of TB
Triglycerides
>110mg/dL is indicative of chylothorax
NT-ProBNP
Highly sensitive & specific for heart failure
Acid-Fast Bacilli
If TB pleuritis suspected
Cytology
Sensitivity ~60%
May yield a diagnosis of malignancy
