Lung Function Tests

Lung Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests including spirometry, flow-volume loops, lung volumes and diffusion capacity can be used to diagnose and grade obstructive or restrictive lung disease.

Forced Vital Capacity

Overview

  • The forced vital capacity (FVC) is the maximal amount of air exhaled after a maximal inspiration.
      • Normal Range

      • 80 - 120% predicted
    • Interpretation

    • Normal FVC indicates normal lung elasticity, a normal chest wall and no respiratory muscle weakness.
    • Low FVC (<80% predicted) is suggestive of restrictive lung disease or poor expiratory effort.
