Generalised Osteosclerosis

  • Look For

  • Generalised increase in bone density.
  • Causes of Generalised Osteosclerosis

  • Congenital / hereditary - osteopetrosis, pyknodysostosis
  • Endocrine - hyperthyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy
  • Metastasis (osteoblastic) - from prostate / breast
  • Myeloproliferative disorders - myelofibrosis, mastocytosis
  • Paget's disease (late)
  • Sickle cell disease

Subchondral Osteosclerosis

  • Look For

  • Increased bone deposition surrounding a joint, in the subchondral layer. May be associated with subchondral cysts, reduced joint space and / or osteophytes.
  • Significance

  • A classical radiological feature of osteoarthritis.
