Generalised Osteosclerosis
Look For
- Generalised increase in bone density.
Causes of Generalised Osteosclerosis
- Congenital / hereditary - osteopetrosis, pyknodysostosis
- Endocrine - hyperthyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy
- Metastasis (osteoblastic) - from prostate / breast
- Myeloproliferative disorders - myelofibrosis, mastocytosis
- Paget's disease (late)
- Sickle cell disease
Subchondral Osteosclerosis
Look For
- Increased bone deposition surrounding a joint, in the subchondral layer. May be associated with subchondral cysts, reduced joint space and / or osteophytes.
Significance
- A classical radiological feature of osteoarthritis.
