Forced Vital Capacity
February 15th, 2021
Overview
The forced vital capacity (FVC) is the maximal amount of air exhaled after a maximal inspiration.
Normal Range
- 80 - 120% predicted
Interpretation
- Normal FVC indicates normal lung elasticity, a normal chest wall and no respiratory muscle weakness.
- Low FVC (<80% predicted) is suggestive of restrictive lung disease or poor expiratory effort.
