Forced Vital Capacity

Overview

The forced vital capacity (FVC) is the maximal amount of air exhaled after a maximal inspiration.
    • Normal Range

    • 80 - 120% predicted
  • Interpretation

  • Normal FVC indicates normal lung elasticity, a normal chest wall and no respiratory muscle weakness.
  • Low FVC (<80% predicted) is suggestive of restrictive lung disease or poor expiratory effort.
