Overview

Transferrin is an transport protein that binds to iron in plasma.
    • Normal Range

    • 1.5 - 3.2 g/L
Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) is the total amount of iron that can be bound to serum transferrin, and as such the TIBC is proportional to the transferrin level.

Elevated Transferrin

Elevated transferrin levels is a marker of iron deficiency.

Reduced Transferrin

Reduced transferrin levels may occur in the setting of an acute phase response or chronic disease. Iron overload may produce a normal or reduced transferrin level.
