Overview

Monocytes are large leukocytes of myeloid origin with blue-grey ground glass cytoplasm and horseshoe-shaped nucleus.
    • Normal Range

    • 0.2 - 1.0 x 10⁹/L
    • 2 - 8% of total leukocytes

Monocytosis

An increase circulating monocytes is known as monocytosis.
  • Causes of Monocytosis

  • Chronic infection - tuberculosis, EBV, bacterial endocarditis
  • Chronic inflammation - rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, SLE
  • Malignancy - chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia, chronic myeloid leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia, lymphoma
  • Post splenectomy
  • Exercise
  • Smoking
