Overview
Monocytes are large leukocytes of myeloid origin with blue-grey ground glass cytoplasm and horseshoe-shaped nucleus.
Normal Range
- 0.2 - 1.0 x 10⁹/L
- 2 - 8% of total leukocytes
Monocytosis
An increase circulating monocytes is known as monocytosis.
Causes of Monocytosis
- Chronic infection - tuberculosis, EBV, bacterial endocarditis
- Chronic inflammation - rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, SLE
- Malignancy - chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia, chronic myeloid leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia, lymphoma
- Post splenectomy
- Exercise
- Smoking
