Overview

Basophils are relatively uncommon white blood cells. Morphologically they are granulocytes with large bluish (basophilic) granules. 
    • Normal Range

    • 0.0 - 0.1 x 10⁹/L
    • 0.5 - 1% of total leukocytes

Basophilia

Basophilia is the presence of increased numbers of circulating basophils.
Marked basophilia is classically a sign of myeloproliferative neoplasms such as CML.
  • Causes of Basophilia

  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms - chronic myeloid leukaemia, polycythaemia vera, myelofibrosis
  • Allergies - asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis
  • Inflammation - autoimmune disease, graft vs host disease
  • Lymphoma
