    • Normal Range

    • <5 x 10⁶

Elevated CSF White Cell Count

  • Causes of Elevated CSF White Cell Count

  • Bacterial - >100 x 10⁶
  • Viral -  10-1000 x 10⁶
  • Fungal - 10-500 x 10⁶
  • Tubercular meningitis - 50-500 x 10⁶
  • Traumatic collection - WBC:RBC ratio 1:1000
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage - WBC:RBC ratio 1:1000
  • Interpretation

  • Monocyte predominance - suggestive of viral meninigits
  • Polymorphonuclear predominance (>80%) - suggestive of bacterial meningitis
