- Swelling - trauma, meningitis, encephalitis, subarachnoid haemorrhage, water intoxication
- Defective CSF circulation - obstructive or communicating hydrocephalus
- Venous sinus obstruction - venous sinus thrombosis, depressed fracture
- Benign intracranial hypertension
