Overview
The left hilum is normaly 1-2cm higher than the right hilum.
Hilar Displacement
Look For
- Superior or inferior displacement of one hilum in relation to the other.
Causes of Hilar Displacement
- Volume loss - lobectomy, pneumonectomy, significant atelectasis
- Volume expansion - tension pneumothorax, large pleural effusion
Example
- Superior displacement of the left hilum in a patient with a pleural effusion
