Reduced Ascitic Fluid Glucose

Overview
The glucose concentration of ascitic fluid is normally very similar to the serum glucose.
Significance
- Low glucose in ascitic fluid is suggestive of consumption in the setting of bacterial / tuberculous peritonitis or malignancy; however the sensitivity and specificity of this finding are low.
