Hyperuricaemia

Overview

It is important to note that while hyperuricaemia predisposes to gout and nephrolithiasis, its presence does not indicate the presence of these conditions.
  • Causes of Hyperuricaemia

  • Increased Production

  • Diet - purines (liver, kidney, anchovies, mussels, bacon, veal, venison), ethanol, fructose
  • Haematologic - leukaemia, lymphoma, polycythaemia
  • Drugs - cytotoxic drugs, exogenous B12
  • Obesity
  • Psoriasis
  • Hypertriglyceridaemia
  • Reduced Excretion

  • Drugs - cytotoxics, diuretics, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, aspirin
  • Renal - hypertension, polycystic kidneys, CKD
  • Metabolic - dehydration, lactic acidosis, ketosis, hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism
  • Obesity
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Pregnancy
