Test Findings




    • Look For

    • Serum magnesium >1.1 mmol/L.


    • Causes of Hypermagnesaemia

    • Usually occurs in the setting of magnesium administration (e.g. supplements, antacids, enemas) in patients with renal failure.

Clinical Features

    • Signs and Symptoms

    • Occur only with severe hypermagnesaemia.
    • Nausea / vomiting
    • Drowsiness
    • Muscle weakness / hyporeflexia
    • Vasodilation / hypotension
    • Blurred vision / diplopia
    • ECG Changes

    • Hyperkalaemia - tented T waves, P wave flattening, prolonged PR, prolonged QRS, short QT
    • Associated Lab Abnormalities

    • Hyperkalaemia
    • Hypocalcaemia
