Look For
- Serum magnesium >1.1 mmol/L.
Aetiology
Causes of Hypermagnesaemia
- Usually occurs in the setting of magnesium administration (e.g. supplements, antacids, enemas) in patients with renal failure.
Clinical Features
Signs and Symptoms
- Occur only with severe hypermagnesaemia.
- Nausea / vomiting
- Drowsiness
- Muscle weakness / hyporeflexia
- Vasodilation / hypotension
- Blurred vision / diplopia
ECG Changes
- Hyperkalaemia - tented T waves, P wave flattening, prolonged PR, prolonged QRS, short QT
Associated Lab Abnormalities
- Hyperkalaemia
- Hypocalcaemia
