Overview
The antistreptolysin (ASO titre) measures the presence and amount of antibody directed against streptolysin O, a streptococcal exotoxin.
Normal Range
- <200 U/mL
Elevation of the ASO titre is indicative of recent group A streptococcal infection, which may suggest the presence of poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis or acute rheumatic fever in patients with concerning clinical features.
Causes of Elevated Antistreptolysin Titre
- Group A streptococcal infection - pharyngitis, tonsillitis, scarlet fever, impetigo, cellulitis, necrotising fasciitis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis
- Poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis
- Acute rheumatic fever
