Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies
Overview
- Antithyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibodies are directed against thyroglobulin, a thyroid storage protein.
Significance
- Antithyroglobulin antibodies are present in 80-90% of patients with chronic autoimmune (Hashimoto's) thyroiditis, though are also present in other thyroid diseases.
- Antithyroglobulin antibodies are not usually required in the diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism as almost all cases are due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
