Neer Sign

Overview

  • The Neer sign is used to assess for subacromial impingement, by precipitating impingement of the supraspinatus tendon between the acromion and the greater tuberosity of the humerus.
    • How to Elicit

    • Stabilise the scapula and raise the arm into full flexion (anteriorly).
    • Abnormal If

    • Pain.
    • Causes of Subacromial Impingement

    • Subacromial bursitis
    • Rotator cuff tendinitis
    • Rotator cuff tear
  • The Neer sign is the first part of the Neer injection impingement test. The second part involves injection of xylocaine into the joint space in order to differentiate between impingement and other causes of shoulder pain.
