Empty Can Test

Overview

The empty can test is used to assess for supraspinatus rupture / dysfunction, by stressing the supraspinatus.
  • How to Perform

  • Fully internally rotate the shoulder, abduct the arm to 90°, with 30° of forward flexion and the thumb pointing downward. Apply a downward pressure to the patient's forearm while stabilising the shoulder with the other arm. Ask the patient to resist this motion.
  • Abnormal If

  • Pain / weakness
