Apley Scratch Test

Overview

The Apley scratch test is used to assess the range of motion of the glenohumeral joint, and potential rotator cuff tear.
  • How to Perform

  • Ask the patient to reach behind their head and touch the medial aspect of the opposite scapula (abduction & external rotation).
  • Ask the patient to reach across their chest and touch the acromion of the opposite shoulder (internal rotation & adduction).
  • Ask the patient to reach behind their back and touch the inferior angle of the opposite shoulder (internal rotation and adduction).
  • Abnormal If

  • Inability to complete these motions smoothly.
