PICC-Related Thrombosis

 
 

Overview

    • Clinical Features

    • Pain, swelling, erythema of the upper arm
    • Symptoms / signs of pulmonary embolism
    • Prevention

    • Use the smallest possible PICC line
    • Minimise PICC line duration where possible
    • Management

    • Watch for signs and symptoms for early diagnosis
    • Ultrasound to confirm thrombosis
    • Remove the PICC
    • Look for signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism
    • Commence anticoagulation as apppropriate
