Overview

  • Clinical Features

  • Pain, swelling, erythema of the upper arm (subclavian line) or leg (femoral line)
  • Symptoms / signs of pulmonary embolism
  • Prevention

  • Use the smallest possible CVC
  • Minimise CVC duration where possible
  • Management

  • Watch for signs and symptoms for early diagnosis
  • Ultrasound to confirm thrombosis
  • Remove the CVC
  • Look for signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism
  • Commence anticoagulation as apppropriate
