Prostate Enlargement
Feel For
- Enlargement of the prostate, through the anterior rectal wall.
Normal Size
- 20 grams, or approximately the size of a walnut.
Causes of Prostate Enlargement
- Benign prostatic hypertrophy
- Prostate cancer
- Prostatitis
Interpretation
- Soft, painless enlargement - suggestive of BPH
- Tender enlargement - suggestive of prostatitis
- Asymmetric, firm enlargement - suggestive of prostate cancer
Prostate Nodularity
Feel For
- A palpable nodule over the prostate, which may be enlarged.
Causes of Prostate Nodularity
- Prostate cancer
- Prostatic nodule
- Prostatic calculus
Prostate Tenderness
Feel For
- Tenderness over the anterior rectal wall, over the prostate.
Significance
- Suggestive of prostatitis.
