Doxycycline

    Doxycycline

    • Mechanism of Action
    • Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30s ribosomal subunit, resulting in inaccurate mRNA translation.
    • Microbiology
    • Broad range of activity against gram positives, gram negatives, atypical respiratory organisms (Legionella, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma), rickettsia and some spirochaetes

Clinical Use

    • Indications
    • Atypical pneumonia - Legionella, Chlamydophyla, Myoplasma
    • Rickettsial infections - typhus, African tick bite fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Australian tick typhus
    • Malaria prophylaxis
    • Lyme disease
    • Brucellosis
    • Chlamydia
    • Syphilis
    • Acne
    • Adverse Effects
    • Oesophagitis
    • Photosensitivity
    • Tooth discolouration
    • Nausea / vomiting / diarrhoea
    • Pseudomembranous colitis (C difficile)
