Causes of Metabolic Alkalosis
- Bicarbonate excess - milk alkali syndrome (antacids), massive transfusion, dialysis
- GI acid loss - vomiting, NG aspirates, gastric fistula
- Renal acid loss - diuretics, hyperaldosteronism, Cushing's, steroids
- Compartmental shift - hypokalaemia
Diagnosis
Blood Gas Findings
- Alkalaemia with raised bicarbonate.
