Causes of Hyperphosphataemia
Excessive Phosphate Intake / Production
- Phosphate replacement
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Tumour lysis syndrome
Reduced Excretion
- Renal failure - acute or chronic
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Bisphosphonates
- Osteoblastic metastases
Manifestations
Signs and Symptoms
Generally asymptomatic unless severe.- Hypocalcaemia - hyperreflexia, tetany, seizures, heart failure
Diagnosis
Bloods
- Serum phosphate >1.5 mmol/L.
