Pathogenesis

  • Causes of Hyperphosphataemia

  • Excessive Phosphate Intake / Production

  • Phosphate replacement
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Tumour lysis syndrome
  • Reduced Excretion

  • Renal failure - acute or chronic
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Bisphosphonates
  • Osteoblastic metastases

Manifestations

  • Signs and Symptoms

    Generally asymptomatic unless severe.
  • Hypocalcaemia - hyperreflexia, tetany, seizures, heart failure

Diagnosis

  • Bloods

  • Serum phosphate >1.5 mmol/L.
